French sailor Loick Peyron broke the record for the mythical Route du Rhum transatlantic race from St Malo in northern France to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. The 54 year old lone skipper of the 31.5 metre (103 foot) trimaran Banque Populaire VII sailed the theoretical course of 3,524 nautical miles at an average of 19.34 knots. In reality Peyron covered 4,199 nautical miles at an average of 22.93 knots. He arrived on 10 November 2014 with a time of 7 days 15 hours 8 minutes.
